FTP Troubleshooting
This document assumes you know all about FTP, but suddenly it doesn't work. Our strategy is to test the basic ftp operations with the command line FTP client, and verify that the security settings are correct on our server

Basic Information To access your website, type "ftp and the URL of your website". Eg: ftp Mydomain.com. The system will then ask you for your account name. Type in your domain name, but without the .com extension. Eg: The account for serratus.com is "Serratus". It will then ask for your password. If you are unsure of it, contact bluesoft. Below is a summary of the above 3 steps:

  ftp Serratus.com
  User: Serratus
  Password: (get this from bluesoft)

Once you are logged in, you will see a "ftp" prompt on your command line, such as below:

  FTP>
First thing to do is type "Help" on the ftp command line, and you should see a list of about 40 commands. The most important are "dir", "get", "put", "delete", "mkdir" and "bye". Below is a test sequence using the preceeding commands:

 a. Type "dir". You should see all the files at the root of your website.
 b. Type "get" and the name of one of your files. This should transfer it to the current directory from which you started up ftp.
 c. Type "Put" and the same filename. Eg: put myfile.txt (this tests that you have "write" access".
 d. Type "mkdir testDir". This makes a new sub-directory.
 e. type "cd". This should change to your new subdirectory. Put a file into it.
 f. type "bye". This ends your test.

When you have completed the test, tell me exactly which of the above tests have failed. You can email me or phone me at 604-669-7004 x111, and I'll look into it immediately.
