Renew Scam
Domain Registry of Canada This organization sends out very misleading letters titled IMPORTANT NOTICE which look very official, containing a red maple leaf, and often indicate false expiry dates. What they do is print thousands of these "expiry notices" once or twice a year, and then wait for up to 6 months before mailing them. In the meantime, the majority would have already renewed their domains, but they don't care, they argue that its good advertising, and if the information is wrong you can just throw away the letter.

Here is the first part of a letter I received on 2002 November 22:

IMPORTANT NOTICE We understand that your domain name 'Bivouac.com' expires on March 04, 2003. You must renew your domain name to retain exclusive rights...

When I received the letter, I looked at the date and thought that perhaps something had gone wrong, because as far as I knew, I had renewed months ago. So I looked in the "Whois" database, and sure enough, it showed I had renewed this domain name 6 months ago, and the true expiry was in March 2004! Just to double check, I phoned the "customer service" number. The person I dealt with said they pre-print them up to 6 months before they mail them, and don't bother to do any further checking immediately before sending them. He was fully aware that in most cases the information would be out of date, but said if the information is wrong, just disregard them.
