Eudora Configuration and Troubleshooting
The Eudora email client is provided by a company called Qualcomm.com. They offer both a free version, and also a paid version. To download the latest version of Eudora: Qualcomm.com Now that you have Eudora installed, we can talk about how to configure it to work with the Bluesoft Pop Server. All pop email clients require the following pieces of information:
  1. Name of the POP Server on which your mail account resides (Eg: mail.bluesoft.ca)
  2. Name of your pop mail account (Eg: "Ben")
  3. The password for your Pop account. (Eg: "myPassword")
  4. The name of the Outbound SMTP server. (Eg: mail.YourDialupProvider.com)
  5. Your return address (Eg: Ben@abc.com)
Here are the fields in Eudora which contain this information. You should carefully check each one of them and retype them if you are having trouble:
  1. Pop Account: Ben@mail.bluesoft.ca Note that Eudora combines the pop mail account and the name of the pop server into a single parameter!
  2. Outbound SMTP Server: mail.YourDialupProvider.com (Note that the outbound mail server is provided by your dialup provider, not by Bluesoft. This is necessary because in order to prevent unauthorized junk mail companies from using the Bluesoft server, we have to prevent "relaying" of mail originating from any network other than our internal network. Preventing relaying from outside addresses is a common procedure now with most ISPs.)
  3. Your Return Address: Ben@abc.com

Troubleshooting Test Procedures:

Assuming you are fairly certain you have your Eudora mail client correctly configured as per the above instructions, and are STILL having a problem, we have to get into systematic troubleshooting. What we are going to do is make a list of the "actors", then a list of the possible problems, and then perform some tests to eliminate certain possibilities. Here are the actors:
  1. Your Account
  2. Your mail client
  3. The pop mail server
  4. your outbound SMTP server
  5. The internet between you and us
  6. Some combination of the above

Here are possible problems:

  1. Problem with the account "Ben" (Eg: could be jammed up with a large message. Or you could have the wrong password)
  2. Problem with your configuration of Eudora. Eg: You could have the wrong parameter value in your Eudora client for Pop Account. (It should be "Ben@mail.bluesoft.ca")
  3. General problem with the Bluesoft mail server (mail.bluesoft.ca) Eg: The bluesoft mail server is down and doesn't work for ANYBODY.
  4. Specific problem that your service provider is having connecting with the bluesoft mail server.

In order for us to work on the problem,we need to eliminate some of the above possibilities. We can eliminate everything associated with the specific "Ben" account by swapping in a test account. For this purpose we have set up a test account called "Test3", with a password of "password" and an email address of "Test3@2a.com". The procedure will be to send a message to this account, then change the configuration of your Eudora client so you can pick up this message. Here is the procedure:

  • In your Eudora client, find the field called Pop Account and type in: "test3@mail.bluesoft.ca" .
  • Now send a message to this account, using the address is "test3@2a.com". (I used the "2a" domain so there is no possibility that you get confused with the name of our mail server which is mail.bluesoft.ca
  • Now try to pick up the message you just sent with your mail client.

Now here are the possible results of that test:

  • You are unable to SEND the test message. If so you have an outbound mail problem. (Can you send ANY message?)
  • You are unable to PICK UP the message. If so, it would seem that you can't pick up a message from ANY bluesoft mail account, not just Ben. So its not a problem with a large message in the ben account. It could be (a) that there is a problem with your mail client. Or (b) some sort of problem with some part of the internet between you and us, which causes the thing to time out.

In summary, when you have a problem, perform the above test 3 or 4 times in a row, and be sure you can repeat exactly the problem. Your job is to CONVINCE us that xxx is definitely the problem, and then we can go in and work on it. If there is any part of this test procedure that is unclear, please email me.
